What's In My Makeup Bag - Ruki Garuba
Ruki Garuba is a UK born stylist based in California who has worked for various celebrities such as Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, Nia Long and Keyshia Cole. She took time out to show us the products in her makeup bag. Describe the items in your makeup bag. Keeping my skin healthy and youthful is my number one goal. Kelly Rowland taught me that the key to great makeup is to make taking care of the skin underneath it a priority. Her skin and makeup always look amazing, so that advice has stuck with me over the years. I always start my makeup routine by washing my face with Eve Lom and follow that up with Eve Lom Oil Free Moisturiser. I keep travel-sized versions of both in my makeup bag. I have combination skin that can get quite oily in the summer; Smashbox Photofinish Light Primer helps me keep that under control and also gives my foundation a nice smooth base to stick to.
Day to day I use Bobbi Brown Long Wear Even Finish Foundation SPF 15. It’s has a really nice silky texture and lasts all day. If I want more coverage I add their Foundation Stick to those areas. Over the summer months, when I’m tanned I switch to NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. It gives such a pretty glow and feels so light on my skin; I forget I’m wearing it.
My brows are very low maintenance. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil is great for subtly filling in sparse patches and lengthening my brows on the ends. The pencil is super thin and the lines it draws are about the same thickness as a strand of hair. MAC Blunt Powder has consistently been in my makeup for over a decade now. It’s a matte brown shade perfect for contouring, and as an alternative a bright blush if I’m wearing a bold lip. It’s probably the most multi-functional product in my makeup bag. I buy it in pairs, so I never run out.
NARS Exhibit A Blusher is the most adventurous items I have in my makeup bag. It’s a very bright shade of red and the makeup artist at the counter had to really convince me to initially try it. I love how it brightens up my whole face. It’s a real lifesaver for deflecting tiredness, and looking more youthful. My lashes are also low maintenance, I use L’Oreal Volumious Mascara. It gives an almost identical finish to Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara, which I used for years prior and still occasionally use. Both are great for lengthening and lifting. I don’t really do much else with my eyes so, a great mascara is important to me.
Finding a highlight that wasn’t loaded with glitter or sparkly particles and looked good against brown skin was a challenge, but I eventually found exactly what I was looking for in NARS South Beach Highlighter Stick. It gives a subtle golden glow that can be blended down or built up for a more dramatic look. I use it on my cheeks, along the bridge of my nose and on my lids instead of eye shadow. Day to day I wear Bare Essentials Birthday Suit Lip Gloss. It’s a nude colour with a great shine that looks very natural. When I want to get fancy I go for MAC Luxe or Ruby Woo Lipstick.
I finish my makeup off with Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. It keeps my makeup and reduces shine. I have quite sensitive skin, so I’m really happy that the formula doesn’t irritate my skin at all. Lastly I have a selection of MAC, Bobbi Brown and Real Techniques Makeup Brushes. They all get the job well but I just ordered a few Artis Oval brushes, I can’t wait for them to arrive I’ve read such great reviews about them.
Which is your favourite item in your makeup bag? It's a tie between my Eve Lom Cleanser for my skin and Anastasia Brow Wiz for thick yet groomed brows and L’Oreal Mascara to open up my eyes. I could happily live without everything else.
Where did you get your makeup bag? I found it at Target about a year ago, it’s by Joy Mangano. I travel a lot so keeping my makeup organised and having everything I need to do my makeup from start to finish in one place is magical. Everything is arranged in the order I use them starting with skin care in the first section and ending with setting spray and lip products in the last section. I also love that the sections are attached to the base of the bag by Velcro, so if I needed to I could put a few essentials into one section and leave the rest of the bag behind. Plus the sections are clear which means I can see exactly what is inside.
