Ayurveda is a science of life. It was developed thousands of years ago by sages in India and was designed to help people stay vibrant and healthy while living up to their full human potential. In Ayurveda one of the practices is finding your own mind-body type and its special needs with a view to customising your own approach to health. It’s from this philosophy and practice that forms the bedrock of urbanveda’s natural skincare range. Using the three Ayurveda doshas (mind-body types): Pitta, Vata and Kapha, urbanveda has devised a skincare system aimed at balancing each dosha. I trialled urbanveda’s Soothing Collection which is part of the pitta range was created for sensitive skin which I have. I am prone to mild eczema and acne flair up so I began using the range when I had a breakout. From first sight, I admired the branding and packaging. Its name conjured up the notion of relaxation and peace, in spite of busy modern living. Reading each product direction, I felt encouraged to take time with my skin care regime rather than rushing through it as I often do.

When I began using urbanveda for some reason  I naturally slowed my pace. I even began waking up earlier in the morning to have quite time to myself and while cleansing. The heady fragrances of ylang ylang, geranium and sandal wood soothed and lifted my spirits. I could feel myself unwinding with every use. I left home with pep in my step. I trialled the Soothing Daily Facial Wash; Soothing Hydrating Toner and the Soothing Day Cream for 14 mornings and here are my findings:

Soothing Daily Facial Wash There is one botanical in this product which is Arjuna and it has many uses but in skincare it’s used for its astringent antioxidant properties which aids in acne prevention. The cleanser comes in tube. It has a jelly-like consistency and is clear in colour. It smells divine. I picked up on the geranium note in this one and it was gentle and moisturising. My skin felt clean and soft after every wash without the stiff squeaky feeling that some cleansers can give.

Soothing Hydrating Toner This product comes in a clear plastic bottle. The liquid is of a light brownish colour and one of the botanicals in the toner is Aloe Vera. This ingredient is used in Ayurvedic medicine to help skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema and Acne. At first I liked the toner but after about one week my skin began to dry out a bit. I should mention that for most of my adult life, toner has not been part of my skincare regime. In fact it’s only been about one year since I began using one and even then I didn’t use it every day. Although the active ingredient in this toner is glycerine which is a known humectant, my skin still became dry. I’m inclined to believe that in my case toner isn’t need every day. I don’t wear makeup often and I’m not outdoors for more than an1 hour in total daily. Hence, I will not fault this product. Once I desisted from using it every day my skin continued to improve and the moisture came back.

Soothing Day Cream This cream is packaged in a clear glass pot and it has a light but creamy texture. I picked up on the Sandalwood fragrance and I loved it. The cream absorbed effortlessly into the skin. Most importantly, my skin looked hydrated all day and felt soft and supple.

This range improved the overall condition of my skin and controlled my acne. Based on the price point, the aromatherapy experience and results I had from using the range I would certainly recommend it. The cleanser and toner should last for about two months. The cream will last for at least one month. It may also interest potential customers, that Urban Veda brand philosophy supports is sustainability, respect for the planet and no animal testing.
