Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and Acai Body Power Cream

Sol de Janeiro is a body care brand mostly known for the very popular Bum Bum Cream. It is probably one of the most hyped body butters of the skincare community. The brand, which was created in Brazil also has a lot of other products including body scrubs, body sprays and lip butters.

The Bum Bum Cream is formulated with Guaraná extract, Cupuaçu Butter and oils like Acai and Coconut. This bestselling and award-winning product promises to smooth your skin and leave it with an all over glow.  I also received the Acai Body Power Cream which has been infused with antioxidants to help protect your skin from free radicals and provide deep hydration with the help of coconut oil and Cupuacu butter.

I was really excited to receive these because I have been wanting to try the Bum Bum Cream for a while. Let’s start with the scent which is amazing, it is a blend of salted caramel, pistachios, jasmine and almonds and it lingers throughout the day. I do agree with the brand in terms of how fast absorbing the cream is, however when it came to moisturising my skin I didn’t think it did a good job.

I do not have dry skin but I do use African Black Soap everyday which tends to leave my skin a little dry and tight. To combat this, I prefer to use rich body butters that have a lot of oils in them to moisturise and lock moisture into my skin. I also like body butters with an ‘oily’ finish. The Bum Bum cream didn’t provide enough moisture for me and I found myself layering it two times in order for my skin to feel comfortable enough.

The product has a rich luxurious feel which doesn’t feel heavy on the skin and doesn’t have an oily finish. The texture actually feels nice although I was taken aback by the shimmery finish it left.

There was no mention of shimmer on the packaging so I was very surprised by this. It does says on the website that it leaves an ‘all-over glow’ but to me that doesn’t necessarily mean shimmer. As I had to layer this cream on my skin the shimmer was obvious which I didn’t really appreciate for an everyday body butter.

The Acai Body Powder Butter smells like a very healthy power smoothie, it is a pleasant scent but it doesn’t linger as long as the Bum Bum Cream. Again I found the cream fast absorbing with a luxurious texture but not enough moisture for my skin. Again I had to layer this on like the Bum Bum Cream and it also had shimmer in it. I liked it because it contains antioxidant protection but it’s just not enough moisture for me.

My experience with the Sol de Janeiro body butters have been bittersweet. I absolutely love the packaging and the scent of these creams however the shimmer was a surprise and it’s not enough moisture for my skin, especially during the winter and with me using the African Black Soap. They feel very lightweight on so I can imagine them been very nice in the summer. I think if I used a more hydrating body wash I would probably like these better and they would do a better job at moisturising.

To be honest, since I started using Black Soap( about two to three years ago) I have come away from buying store bought body butters because I couldn’t find one moisturising enough. I have resulted to making my own DIY body butter with Shea, Cocoa and Mango butter mixed with oils. I will definitely use these again but more of a topper for that shimmer glow on the skin rather than a body butter alone.

Is the Bum Bum Cream worth the hype? Yes and no. Yes because it smells amazing (although it you didn’t like the scent you would be stuck with it for the rest of the day) and if you had normal skin the moisture it provides would be enough. No, because if you have extremely dry skin or you use a wash that leaves your skin dry it may not provide enough moisture.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream and Acai Body Power Cream are both priced at £18.00 each.
