So contouring isn’t new, but this season we can’t get away from brands releasing various contouring products, seeing as this method isn’t reserved for just makeup artists, now brands are making it much more accessible and user friendly. In walks Smashbox with their version of this 'contouring for the masses' trend with the Step-by-Step Contour Stick Trio. This Trio includes a contouring, bronzing and highlighting stick in pencil format. It is certainly one of the more user friendly deliveries, and even comes with a handy booklet on the best ways to contour for your specific face shape. You literally paint your face in the appropriate areas and blend. The formula is super creamy; the sticks also come with a sharpener, to maintain the point.

Smashbox wanted to create three shades that mimic the perfect lighting; Contour - a darker shade that sculpts by creating shadows, Highlight - a light shade that pulls features forward and Bronze - a transition shade that eliminates harsh lines by blending the contour and highlight shades. Apparently these can also be used wet, for a more sheer application but this is where the problem lies.

Smashbox have created one shade of each of these sticks that are said to be universal, the Contour shade on me is extremely subtle, it’s a great cool toned true contour shade and does gives a slight shadow to my features. This would be great on a medium skin tone that likes a subtle contour. The Bronze shade is pretty much a match for my skin tone and being matte didn’t even give me a glow. The Highlight shade actually didn’t come off as ashy as I had thought it would, but again there is no shimmer to this, which I think would have helped to catch the light more, especially on a darker skin tone.

I think some sort of shimmer or sheen would have been of benefit in the Highlight and Bronze shade, and I hope Smashbox will release a darker version of this trio. You have to be lighter than an NC50 to possibly benefit from this, but there are other contour products on the market that do a much better job on brown beauties.

Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Stick Trio is priced at £35.00.
