Shea Moisture Raw Shea & Cupuacu Frizz Defense
Most naturalistas are always seeking the perfect hair cocktail for frizz-free hair. Although our choices are much improved from even three years ago, it’s still a challenge to find a variety of products that cater for the wide spectrum of curls of afro hair. I have fine natural hair and many popular haircare brands will give me volume or well formed curls. On the rare occasion when I found something which ticked all the boxes for me, I knew it would not give the same result for a naturalista with thicker, kinkier hair. Enter Shea Moisture’s new range, Raw Shea & Cupuacu Frizz Defense. I’ve used other Shea Moisture ranges in the past and sometimes the styling aid was too heavy for my curls. Although on the bottle it states that the Raw Shea & Cupuacu is for thick, wavy hair, I can honestly say it can be used by all hair types.
Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea & Cupuacu range has nine products, four of which are haircare. In the UK we currently have three of the products from the haircare range; Raw Shea & Cupuacu Frizz Defense Shampoo, Frizz Defense Conditioner and Frizz Defense Styling Gel-Cream.
The key featured ingredients in the range are Raw Shea Butter for moisture, Amazonian Cupuacu for defence against damaging free radicals and Passiflora Oil which conditions and smoothes to improve the look and feel of the hair.
I’ve used all three products as a three step system, as well as alongside other Shea Moisture products. Although I was pleased with the results, the consistency of the shampoo surprised me. Unlike most Shea Moisture shampoos the Defense Shampoo is not thick. If you are familiar with the brand it’s like the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo - runny. Nonetheless, it cleansed my hair without stripping it.
The rich Defense Conditioner was a perfect follow up and my hair felt silky and detangling was a breeze. My hair is colour-treated which makes it a little dryer than normal. Consequently, I had the best results by applying a leave-in-conditioner before the Styling Gel-Cream. Once my curls were set, I followed up with a light organic oil to complete my styling.
The gel-cream is excellent; it has a thick consistency but not too heavy to weigh the hair down. It has terrific hold and hydration for curls, even on damp days my style held. Best of all, I believe it will work well for all curly, coily, kinky hair types. Use as little or as much as you’d like to perfect your hairstyling. All the style without the crunch. Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea & Cupuacu Frizz Defense range is a welcome addition to the UK haircare market.
Shea Moisture Raw Shea & Cupuacu Frizz Defense Shampoo, Frizz Defense Conditioner and Frizz Defense Styling Gel-Cream are priced at £10.99 each. You can buy these products from Boots and Superdrug.
