My Trip to Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa
Last summer I had a really traumatising experience at a local hairdressers. My hair has been natural for ten years and I had taken it out of braids so decided to have my usual treatment. I decided to go to a local hairdressers and instead of giving me simple treatment, they decided (for unspeakable reason) to mix some relaxer in with the treatment there to create some weird concoction. To cut a long story short my hair ended up being semi relaxed in the middle and natural at the back. Needless to say I was beyond furious. The situation now is that my hair is in a transitional phase with multi textures. I was wearing it in braids but I have decided to wear it natural so I can keep any eye on it and give it regular treatments. It is also very dry and although it slicks back into a ponytail perfectly it is hard to style. When I was invited by Aveda to come into their Lifestyle Salon and Spa to have a Botanical Therapy service and a Botanical Blow Dry by one of their stylist who specialises in afro hair I was very interested. First of all, who knew that Aveda did afro hair. I have only just discovered how great their makeup range is but it seems that the brand is a bit of a dark horse and rather overlooked.
I headed down to the Aveda branch in Holborn and I was seen to by Subrina Kidd. I explained my sorry saga to her and she suggested that she use the Dry Remedy products to add moisture to my dry hair and instead of having a blow dry after the treatment that I should opt for a twist out.
She started off by washing my hair first with Brilliant Shampoo to remove product build up and then a second wash using Damage Remedy Restructuring Shampoo. This product contains hero ingredient quinoa which is high in protein and helps to restore health to your hair from damage caused by heat or chemical processing. Subrina then conditioned my hair with Damage Remedy Restructuring Conditioner – combined with Dry Remedy Moisturising Treatment Masque for protein and moisture injection to reconstruct and hydrate.
I was put under the steamer for around 15 minutes and my hair was blown dry. To achieve the twist out, Subrina used Brilliant: Universal Styling Cream and Brilliant Universal Anti- Humectant Pomade. I was then put under the hood dryer for around 20 minutes for the twist out to set. The result was lovely set of curls that defined my face.
I have never had a twist out before (I must be the only natural lady who has not) I have always admired them from afar so I was curious about how they would look on me. I was very impressed with the service at Aveda and found them to be very professional and attentive. Subrina really took time out to listen to my needs and made some really good suggestions not just on which treatment to go for but also gave me lots of advice on how to achieve a twist out and how to look after my hair.
