Five Minutes with Niya Carrington
Niya Carrington is the founder of Bvcklash Beauty who provide top-quality lashes. The brand was created in New York in 2017 with the aim to encourage her customers to be bold, daring and take risks in beauty. Niya took time out to tell us all about Bvcklash Beauty.
What made you decide to set up your own beauty business?
I fell in love with the art of makeup; makeup artists and beauty influencers amazed me with their impeccable artistry. I wasn't the best at applying makeup but I still wanted to be involved in the industry. I also started my business because I wanted to represent the urban culture. Bvcklash Beauty was created to spark a movement of self-love and self-acceptance. Our goal is to bring cultural awareness to the beauty industry by using this platform as a voice for the underrepresented.
What is the concept behind Bvcklash Beauty?
The concept behind Bvcklash Beauty is empowerment. We want to encourage our supporters to take risks and be themselves, and to live out their dreams despite the "backlash" they may face. The lack of black-owned makeup brands has caused the beauty industry to misrepresent people of colour in several ways, time and time again. My dream is to change the perception of beauty. Can they handle the Bvcklash?
What sort of research did you do to find out what sort of lashes your customers needed?
I watched influencers on YouTube and Instagram to see what falsies beauty enthusiasts favoured. They talked about what lashes worked for specific eye shapes and how strip lashes could instantly elevate your makeup look. A recurring complaint I noticed was the weight of falsies and how heavy they could feel while wearing them throughout the day. With that in mind, I made sure that Bvcklash Beauty's mink lashes were all lightweight to prevent that feeling of discomfort. We currently sell nine styles that range from natural to dramatic styles in order to suit every customer's needs.
How did you decide on the look and feel of the brand?
I aimed for Bvcklash Beauty to provide an experience for our customers. From the moment you open the case to apply the falsies to after a long night of slaying in them, we want you to feel nothing less than glamorous. I drew my inspiration for the style names from my New York City upbringing. Each style is named after popular lingo that we use. Since we provide top quality lashes, our packaging had to be top quality too. Our cruelty-free 3D mink lashes come in a reusable mirror case to store your falsies. It's 2018, cardboard and plastic packaging is played out.
What are your future plans for Bvcklash Beauty?
We'll be expanding our lash collection with bolder lashes. We also have a few collaborations in the works as well as interviews with professional makeup artists and beauty Vloggers that will be posted on the website. I envision the brand to be more than just an eyelash vendor, so I have several things in store. Stay tuned.
What are your favourite beauty products?
My current favourite beauty product is Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Gloss. I use it for every makeup look because it makes my lips shine bright like a diamond.
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to set up their own beauty business?
My advice to aspiring beauty entrepreneurs is to invest in themselves and their dreams. It's the only way they'll be able to accomplish their goals. Do not compare your achievements to anyone else's success. Just believe in yourself. There can only be one you.
