Five Minutes with Haydawn Wilson
Haydawn Wilson is the founder and CEO of MYNX LONDON, a vegan, luxury couture nail polish brand that is designed and manufactured in the UK. She took time out to tell us how she created her beauty brand.
What made you decide to set up your own beauty business?
MYNX LONDON was born from my first brand Kandycolors and my desire to produce a high quality luxurious product that is high end quality without the price tag. Kandycolors started from my personal obsession with nail polish and realising only after owning hundreds of bottles that I needed something unique as I was repeatedly accumulating the exact shades. I decided to create my own shades of polish and later found that other women wanted the same.
What is the concept behind MYNX London?
MYNX LONDON was created to celebrate uniqueness. Each lacquer is designed with the unique woman in mind. Fashionistas and trendsetters; women wanting to embrace their unique traits and emphasise it boldly and safety with colour.
What sort of research did you do to find out what sort of products your customers wanted to buy?
Most of my research was ingredients related. The brand started with my personal need for unique shades and textures and women were automatically drawn to these shades so I didn’t need much research in that aspect. I did however find that women wanted vegan friendly products after the formaldehyde scare. Our lacquers are proudly vegan friendly, non toxic and cruelty free and have been free day one.
I also provide a service where women can create their own bespoke shades for those wanting to express their own creative nature. I love fashion and appreciate trends but I try not to follow them when it comes to creating my seasonal collections as this strays away from the brands ethos of creating your own trends.
Your packaging is very sophisticated, how did you decide on the look and feel of the brand?
My aim was luxury and nothing says luxurious like gold. This and my personal need for high standards led to my choices in packaging. The signature gold caps and luxurious velvet pouches mixed with the unique blend of lacquer has always been a hit with our customers. I strive for consistency and aim to continually provide this for them.
What are your future plans for the brand?
Bigger, better, and international. My goal for MYNX LONDON is for it to become a trusted and loved household name. I am also exploring additional beauty products for the brand. Watch this space!
What are your favourite beauty products?
I’m a total nail fanatic so nail polish is top of my list. I still love creating shades for myself. I also love a good face cleanser/scrub and a creamy nude matte lipstick.
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to set up their own beauty business?
Do it because you’re passionate about it, not just for the sales or because someone else is doing it. You must have a genuine love for your business or it won’t work. Research is a must especially around the ingredients. Take your time and enjoy the process ‘your process’ because this is ‘your journey’
