Elf Cosmetics Velvet Matte Lipstick
E.l.f. Cosmetics is a budget beauty brand with an American heritage, that aims to ‘empower and educate women to play in innovation without sacrificing their budget’. I tried the brand’s Velvet Matte Lipstick in shade Blushing Brown. This is a new offering from the brand and one which comes in a variety of shades. E.l.f. Cosmetics describe their Velvet Matte Lipstick as being silky and matte, which ‘glides easily onto lips to lock on moisture with vibrant matte colour’.
The idea of a velvet matte lipstick being moisturising or hydrating is unusual, since most matte lipsticks tend to be drying and hard to apply evenly. However this lipstick has a creamy consistency, and is matte only in finish and not in texture. Whilst there is no gloss present in the finish, there is a vibrant radiance provided (likely from the infusion of argan oil, rose and vitamin E), which again is unusual from a matte lipstick, as these can have a tendency to appear dull.
The shade name suggests that there might be a hint of pink or rose present with the brown, but instead there is the slightest hint of peach, which adds warmth to the versatile mid-brown shade. The peach tinge ensures that the brown is modern, and not the same as the reddish browns that were significant before the turn of the latest century.
Performance-wise, this lipstick delivered complete opacity with a single coat, but did show slight signs of fading after a few hours. This is easily remedied if worn on top of a lip liner. Despite being matte in finish, I did experience a small amount of transfer to the teeth, but it is true that not many lipsticks have a completely zero transfer ability. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this very affordable lipstick and I will be gaining a lot of wear from it over the coming months, where Blushing Brown is aptly suited to the season.
Elf Cosmetics Velvet Matte Lipstick is priced at £4.50.
