brownbeauty Goes Nude Part 1

Our brownbeauty Goes Pink project went down like a storm last year so we decided to do a version with nude lipsticks. Nailing that nude shade can be very tricky; you need to decide which exact nude you are going for. Is it a flesh tone lippy that is pinkish or a natural sheer shade that is literally nude? Then you need to tackle the various textures and finishes - the options are endless. I tasked brownbeauty writers, Jo, Segun, Tunrayo, Joy, Tamara, Alexandra, Sarah and Beatrice to test out nude lipsticks in a variety of shades and by different brands. This is the result of #brownbeautygoesude. We will be running this feature in two parts and the second one will be published on Wednesday. Alexandra (above) tested out nude lipsticks by Smashbox and Stargazer.

Smashbox - Latte Matte This is a pale nude pink with a neutral undertone, it has a matte finish, that isn't too drying although your lips will look their best if they are well prepped. It gives a nice medium coverage in only a couple of swipes. It's my favourite of the bunch, it can be worn without a lip liner, but I think it looks best with one.

Stargazer - 113 These Stargazer lipsticks do not have names, just numbers, annoying right?! Am I the only one that loves a good lippie name? Another downside about these lipsticks is that the bullet is not secure in the packaging; they stick to the tube or move around when applied. This shade is a pinky nude with a mauvy brown undertone, it's very flattering on my skin tone (no need for lip liner), and the formula is very creamy and glides on giving medium coverage in a couple of swipes. It has a satin finish, and this was one of the more secure lipsticks, that didn't move around as much in the bullet and my favourite of the Stargazer bunch.

Joy tried out nude lipsticks by bareMinerals and DHC.

bareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm - Nude From the packaging, it looked as though the bareMinerals Pop of Passion Lip Oil Balm would be the perfect nude for me but unfortunately it didn’t pack enough punch. I do have to say that this was the product was very hydrating and not sticky. I just wish the pigmentation a little stronger.

DHC Moisture Care - Brown Sugar I naturally have dark lips, with my top lip being much darker than my lower lips. Thanks to this, I am often prone to looking like I have ‘ashy lips’ when a colour too light for me is applied. That was the case with the DHC premium lipstick in Rose Gold. Had it been just less shimmery and tad bit browner, then DHC’s Moisture Care in Brown Sugar would have been the perfect nude for my tone. It glides over lips ever so smoothly and I loved how moisturising it is. To me, due to how sheer and shimmery it was, the formula is more of a balm than a lipstick.

Tunrayo (above) tested out nude lipsticks by Fashion Fair and Charlotte Tilbury.

Fashion Fair - Femme I like my nudes lipsticks with pink or brown undertones as I believe that tone works best for my skin. I tried out Femme by Fashion Fair which has a pink tone to it. This shade wins hands down for me because not only is it natural looking but it adds a bit of kick to my lips.

Charlotte Tilbury - Hepburn Honey I tried Hepburn Honey which has a beige tone to it so it can work well for an ombre look. The texture is matt but also moisturising so won't dry out your lips. This lipstick also acts as an anti-oxidant that naturally protects your pout from UV damage and external pollution.

Beatrice tested out shades by MAC.

MAC – Brave I think out of all the three shades I tried this was the most natural looking on me. At times it almost looked as if I had nothing on my lips - and that was my natural lip colour, which I actually liked. I loved the satin finish of this lipstick and I would say the moisture of the lipstick stays on for three to four hours approximately, however the colour stays on even longer. Even when my lips felt dry or I “thought" I needed a touch up, the colour still remained.

Jo (below) tried out nude lipsticks by Essence.

Essence - Brown Nude Budget brand Essence has a range of nude long lasting nude lipsticks, but not all of them are brown beauty friendly. Brown Nude works well on my skin tone, especially if you use a brown lip liner.
