Breakfast With Beverley Knight

It would be safe to say that Beverley Knight is having some sort of a renaissance with her career. A lead role in The Bodyguard Musical which has proved to be a big hit and led to her being nominated for Best Theatre Actress at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards has sent her stock rising. She is set to star in Memphis the Musical when it comes to London later this year. On top of that she has just been nominated as the latest celebrity ambassador of MIZANI. Dubbed the Queen of British Soul, she will be the face of the brand for 2014 and 2015 to showcase how the premium products and treatments help women with curly hair textures achieve beautiful, healthy looking tresses. We caught up with her this week where she talked about beauty, her career and of course MIZANI. On why she chose to be a MIZANI Celebrity Ambassador. I had heard of the brand but never tried it but when I did I was totally sold. MIZANI got a huge thumbs up from me.

On her makeup When I am on, I have everything done. On a day to day basis I tend to wear a touch of mascara and lipgloss and I am out of the door. I want to be seen as a human being who sings.

On her celebrity style inspirations. I have so many but the one who come to mind is Lupita Nyong'o – she looked like a princess at the Oscars; her skin is unreal. Grace Jones because she is just fierce. She is in her mid 60s but looks incredible. Also Skin from Skunk Anansie.

On how her Caribbean culture has influenced her style. I grew up in a strict household which has impacted my music from Sam Cooke's gospel recordings to Aretha Franklin and onto Prince. All of the influences from my childhood has fed into the person I am today.

On her self image. When I was growing up I did not look like my Mum who was stunning or my sister who was tall and beautiful. I was small and had these huge eyes. I wanted to look like the rest of my family however over the years I have embraced my looks and now I love my huge eyes.

On the beauty item that she cannot live without. It's the Lancome Hypnose mascara which accentuates my eyes. It's also great if you have short lashes because it has this thin brush which works through them.

On her favourite MIZANI look. I love the image where I have curly hair. I am used to seeing myself with a sleek bob, short hair or straight but never full on curly.

On the most memorable moment of her career. It has got to be performing with Prince and Stevie Wonder at Prince's Oscar party in front of a group of A List stars. You cannot top that.

Beverley's lazy brownbeauty guide to washing your hair. I have natural hair so I use the Thermasmooth range by MIZANI. I wet my hair, apply MIZANI Thermasmooth Shampoo and wash it through. I repeat this step and by now my hair is getting nice and soft. I use my fingers as a comb to work through the hair and then I put on a shower cap on and leave it. I use this time to bath when I am done then I start sectioning off my hair and towel dry.

On working out at the gym. You need to make sure that your hair is washed regularly because then it will stay soft. If you leave it too long then it gets dry and hard to manage. Also make sure you go for regular treatments.

On the future. I do have plans to make more music in the future but right now I am enjoying my journey in theatre.
