Beauty Idol: Jarette and Gabrielle Marie from Beautie Brownie


Jarette and Gabrielle Marie are the founders of Beautie Brownie, which is a lifestyle brand that aims to empower Women of Colour. They created the website to act as a daily source of inspiration for brown beauties from the news, entertainment, beauty, music, fitness and travel. They decided to created a lipstick collection specifically aimed at women with darker skin tones that would encourage them to be bold, take risks and break barriers with their makeup. They took time out to tell us how they created their beauty brand. What made you decide to set up your own beauty business? We noticed that there is a lack of variety in the beauty industry. There aren't a lot of beautiful images of brown skinned beauties portrayed out there when it comes to cosmetics. We would always get stopped in the street and get complemented for being "bold enough" to rock certain lipstick colours, shades that we didn't think were too bright or bold. They were everyday colours for us. That's when we realised that society's view on what a brown skinned woman should wear is distorted and we wanted to change that.

What is the concept behind Beautie Brownie? Beautie Brownie is a lifestyle brand that provides products, inspiration and information to all of our brown skinned women out there. Our mission is to bring attention to brownbeauty and at its very best, in as many ways that we can.

What sort of research did you do to find out what sort of products your customers wanted to buy? We started with Social Media first, and posted beautiful images of Beautie Brownies, to get a feel for what they liked. We looked at the photos that received the most likes or responses and came to the conclusion that our audience loved images of brown skinned women in vibrant, beautiful bold lip colours. So we came up with a lipstick collection catered to them.

How did you decide on the look and feel of the brand? We went through a lot of changes when it comes to branding when we first started, and we still are. Our Beautie Brownies made our decision easier though. We looked at what they liked on Social Media and also considered the age range of our audience. That helped us decide how to design our look down to colours, fonts, our website template, etc.

What are your future plans for Beautie Brownie? Beautie Brownies plans to develop more as a lifestyle brand, and become more than just cosmetics by providing services that touch every aspect of our Beautie Brownie's lives.

Shea Moisture's Pressed Powder Foundation, MAC's Studio Fix Foundation, Maybellines Fit Liquid Foundation (Dewy), Wet-n-Wilds H20 Proof Liquid Liner, IMAN Eyebrow Pencil, Cover Girl's, Lashblast Mascara, Maybellines Colossal Chaotic Mascara, MAC's Lip Glass and Coloured Rain's Matte Lip Paints.

What advice do you have for anyone who wants to set up their own beauty business? The biggest advice is trademark your name. Before you mention it to anyone - trademark your name and make sure it's finalised before you talk about it. Also, be patient - it takes a while before any funds or recognition comes. Your goals are not going to be reached overnight. So loving your business and what it stands for is key, because if you're only doing it for profit, it will not last long. Stay consistent and you will get to where you want to be.
